Have you ever walked passed a stunning lawn (you know the ones – perfectly trimmed, as if by scissors, and greener than Kermit) and wondered what secret the owner must know that you don’t? Well, the truth is, there is no secret. There are only a few fundamental things that you need to know in order to keep your instant lawn looking good long after it’s been laid.
Whether you live in Canberra or Coober Pedy, have a Sir Walter lawn or Palmetto, the fundamentals of lawn care are the same. Unless you decide to go for artificial grass, your lawn can’t survive without water, the occasional dose of fertiliser and of course it needs regular mowing to keep it happy (and to ensure you can find the path to your house).
Here are some tips we’d like to share to help you keep your grass lush and green:
You should soak your grass well twice a day for the first two weeks as soon as you lay over prepared soil. After the first two weeks watering can be reduced to approximately 1 good soaking a week in order for your grass to catch on well.
You should start mowing your lawn approximately 2 to 4 weeks after installation (depending on the season and variety). A good indication of when your lawn needs mowing is when you cannot lift it off the ground due to the roots being well established.
A suitable fertiliser and a good soak to melt the fertiliser after it has been applied. This should be done every 8 weeks during the growing season to maintain a healthy luscious green lawn. This is most important in autumn to make your lawn healthy through the winter and to be less prone to weeds. You can purchase these fertilisers from our office, most Bunnings stores or your local nursery.
