Have you ever walked passed a stunning lawn (you know the ones – perfectly trimmed, as if by scissors, and greener than Kermit) and wondered what secret the owner must know that you don’t? Well, the truth is, there is no secret. There are only a few fundamental things that you need to know in order to keep your instant lawn looking good long after it’s been laid.

Whether you live in Canberra or Coober Pedy, if you have a Sir Walter lawn, the fundamentals of lawn care are the same. Unless you decide to go for artificial grass, your lawn can’t survive without water, the occasional dose of fertiliser, and of course it needs regular mowing to keep it happy – and to ensure you can find the path to your house!.

Here are some tips we’d like to share to help you keep your grass lush and green:

As soon as you lay your turf over prepared soil, you should soak your grass well twice a day for the first two weeks. After this, watering can be reduced to approximately one good soaking a week in order for your grass to catch on well. For more more information on watering your new lawn, please refer to the “How often do I water my new lawn?” FAQ and watch the video.

You should start mowing your lawn approximately 2 to 4 weeks after installation (depending on the season and variety). A good indication of when your lawn needs mowing is when you cannot lift it off the ground. This indicates that the roots have been well established.

Apply a suitable fertiliser and give your lawn a good soak to dissolve the fertiliser. This should be done every 8 weeks during the growing season to maintain a healthy luscious green lawn. This is most important in autumn as it keeps your lawn healthy and less prone to weeds through the winter. You can purchase these fertilisers from our office, most Bunnings stores or your local nursery. All purpose fertilisers are supplied by Greener Lawn.
